Bert Benjamin was born in Newton, Iowa, and received a B.S. (1893) from Iowa State College (University). Benjamin was employed as a draftsman/designer (1893-1940) for the McCormick Harvesting Machine Company (later International Harvester Company). During his years with IHC, he was granted 140 patents for tractors and tractor accessories and he also developed the Farmall tractor, the first tractor to plow and cultivate row crops.
